THE GOOD

“Looking for Eric”
(MOVIE)

This English movie was a selection at last year’s Cannes Film Festival. After getting high, the protagonist is visited by the ghost of one of his favorite Manchester United soccer players. This apparition offers some advice as to how Eric can win his wife back, and it seems that greatness could ensue.

“Invictus”
(DVD)

Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman were both nominated for Academy Awards for their roles in this stirring true story. If you never got around to catching it in theaters, now is the time to get acquainted. Outstanding actors, a great director — Clint Eastwood — and an unbelievable true story make for quite the viewing experience.

Infinite Arms
(ALBUM)

Band of Horses’ third full-length album shows promise as 2007’s “Cease to Begin,” which was voted 47th best album of that year by “Rolling Stone.” Pop sensibilities, indie instrumentation and a country style should come together.

THE BAD

“Skeletons”
(ALBUM)

There could possibly be some Hawthorne Heights fans around who will be into this CD. Most will not. This band has run its course. If you enjoy quality music, look elsewhere. The fact that they have come up with enough material for four albums is surprising.

THE UNDECIDED

“Stone Temple Pilots”
(ALBUM)

The ’90s grunge kings are releasing their first album in nine years. While it would be nice to have high hopes for these guys, it’s hard for bands who started off as high-energy young musicians to continue making quality music into their 40s and later.

“Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo”
(MOVIE)

This documentary examines Japan’s fascination with insects, particularly beetles. It was released in Japan last year and is now in select theaters in the U.S. It looks interesting, but it seems like a subject that may be more suited to a TV special.
