Effie Eitam, a former Israeli politician and Israeli Defense Force brigadier general, spoke to students Tuesday night about the problems with Palestine and Iran and why people are fighting each other over land and water.

There is a renewal of genocidal voices, which were thought to have disappeared with the Nazi ideology, said a former Israeli politician at a Caravan for Democracy tour lecture in the Langdon Engineering Center.

The threat of Iran having nuclear weapons is a great concern for Israel and the rest of the world, he said.

“We’re standing on a very stable ground of facts,” Eitam said. “Iranians are building a nuclear bomb. Everyone understands it’s a true, near and serious threat.”

The conflicts between Israel and Palestine need to be resolved, he said.

“People are suffering from both sides,” Eitam said. “It’s in no way at the top priority of the world.”

It is difficult to explain the issues Israel faces, he said.

Eitam often encounters the word fascist or racist being used to describe Israel, especially by students on campuses, he said.

“Israel was established after the Holocaust as an answer to the hopes, to the prayers and to the dreams and to the tears and to the pain of the Jewish people after having 6 million of their grandfellows being almost industrially burnt to ash,” Eitam said.

“We’re not about to allow anyone to shape our very existence again.”
